This 3-day desert journey from Marrakech takes you to the edge of the Sahara and back, winding through the High Atlas Mountains, past ancient Kasbahs, and into the dramatic canyons of the Dades and Todra Gorges. Experience a camel trek at sunset, sleep under the stars in a desert camp, and immerse yourself in the diverse landscapes and Berber culture of southern Morocco.
Your adventure begins at 8:00 AM with a departure from Marrakech, heading east towards the High Atlas Mountains. The journey quickly becomes scenic as we ascend the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping at several panoramic viewpoints to capture the stunning landscapes of terraced Berber villages and rugged peaks.
The first major stop is the famed Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This sprawling, fortified city, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, has served as a backdrop for Hollywood films like Gladiator and The Mummy. You’ll have free time to wander through its winding alleys, explore the clay architecture, and enjoy the view from the top.
After lunch in the area, we continue our journey, passing through Ouarzazate and along the scenic ‘Road of One Thousand Kasbahs’. The drive through the Skoura oasis leads us to the dramatic red rock formations of the Dades Valley, where we will arrive at our hotel or riad for a peaceful night’s stay.
Breakfast awaits on a terrace overlooking the Dades valley. From there, we continue toward the Todra Gorges. A short, refreshing walk follows the river between towering limestone cliffs. These canyon walls reach 300 meters high. It’s a perfect chance to stretch your legs and admire the impressive geology.
Leaving the gorges, the road leads us toward the Sahara. We pass through the vast palm groves of the Tafilalet region. By late afternoon, we arrive in the desert village of Merzouga. Here, the vehicle is left behind for a quintessential desert experience. A camel trek carries you across the sandy margins to the Erg Chebbi dunes. The ride pauses so you can watch the breathtaking sunset. The fading light colors the dunes in shades of orange and gold.
Upon arrival at the desert camp, a warm welcome awaits with traditional Moroccan mint tea. After a delicious dinner, the evening comes alive. You might dine in a tent or under the open sky. Later, the rhythmic sound of African drum music fills the air around a campfire. This is a perfect moment to learn about Sahrawi culture. You can then retire to your tent or spend a quiet moment stargazing in the clear desert night.
An early wake-up call brings a magical reward. You’ll witness the sunrise over the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Watch the light transform the landscape in brilliant colors. Afterwards, you’ll take your camel back to Merzouga. A warm shower and a hearty breakfast await at the hotel.
Then, our journey back to Marrakech begins. First, we visit the lively and authentic Rissani Souk. This traditional market offers a vibrant glimpse into local life, far from tourist trails. Leaving Rissani, the route takes us through the Draa Valley. Its seemingly endless expanses of palm trees stretch before us. The drive continues through ever-changing Moroccan scenery. One last traverse of the High Atlas brings us toward Marrakech. We arrive in the city in the evening, marking the end of our 3-day desert trip.
