2 Day Desert Trip from Marrakech to Zagora

Day 1 – Marrakech to Zagora (Atlas Mountains & Desert Sunset)

Your 2-day desert trip to Zagora begins in the morning. Pickup is available from either the airport or your hotel in Marrakech. The journey heads south, climbing into the High Atlas Mountains to the summit of Tizi n’Tichka at 2,260 meters. This pass, whose name means “difficult passage,” offers spectacular mountain views.

Several stops allow for photos of the breathtaking scenery. A significant pause comes at the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. This remarkable fortress has been classed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 1987. Its mud-brick architecture rises dramatically against the mountain backdrop.

Lunch is taken in Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of North Africa.” This city serves as the departure point for the Sahara Desert. After lunch, we continue through the famed Draa Valley. This lush corridor stretches approximately 200 kilometers, lined with countless palm trees and dotted with traditional villages.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Zagora. Here begins the quintessential desert experience: a camel ride trekking out into the desert dunes. The caravan pauses to watch the magical sunset paint the sand in warm hues. As darkness falls, we arrive at the camp. The night is spent in a Berber nomad tent, accompanied by a delicious local dinner served under the stars.

Day 2 – Zagora to Marrakech (Sunrise & The Return Journey)

An early wake-up call rewards you with a stunning sunrise over the dunes. The fantastic landscapes of the harsh Saharan desert unfold in the soft morning light. After absorbing these beautiful moments, breakfast is served at the camp. The sun climbs higher, warming the sand around you.

You have two options for the return. You can ride your camel back to the road near Zagora, or our 4×4 vehicle can collect you directly from the camp. Either way, the journey back to Marrakech begins.

The route traces the Draa Valley once more, passing through Agdez. This stretch offers opportunities to discover the hidden treasures of Morocco’s southern regions. We continue to Ouarzazate, where lunch awaits. Time allows for exploration of the city, including its famous Cinema Studios if you wish.

In the afternoon, the drive back to Marrakech crosses the High Atlas Mountains once again. The winding roads and panoramic views provide a fitting farewell to the mountains. We reach Marrakech around 6:00 PM, marking the end of your two-day desert adventure.
