Fes to Meknes and Volubilis – Imperial Cities & Roman Ruins

Make your visit to Fes unforgettable with a day trip to Meknes and Volubilis, exploring three distinct historical sites. You’ll journey to the imperial city of Meknes, the remarkable Roman ruins of Volubilis, and the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun—all in one carefully curated excursion.

After a morning pickup from your Fes hotel, we head to Meknes, an 11th-century imperial city founded by the Almoravids and later transformed by Sultan Moulay Ismail into a capital rivaling Versailles. Discover its highlights starting with the lively Lahdim Square, a bustling hub reminiscent of Marrakech’s famous square but on a smaller scale.

Admire the grand Bab Mansour gate, considered one of Morocco’s most beautiful and elaborate gateways. Its intricate zellij tile work and monumental scale reflect the ambition of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, one of the few religious sites in Morocco open to non-Muslims, where you can pay respects to the founder of Meknes’ imperial glory.

Continue to the expansive Sahrij Swani basin, a historical reservoir once used to water the royal stables and granaries. This massive pool offers a glimpse into the sophisticated water management systems of the 17th century.

Next, we travel approximately 30 kilometers to Volubilis, a stunning North African archaeological site. Explore the extensive remains of this important Roman outpost, originally founded in the 3rd century BC. Wander through well-preserved streets lined with grand houses, public buildings, and remarkable mosaics that still adorn the floors of ancient villas. The site’s position in a fertile valley offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

The final stop is Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, a picturesque town spread across two hills. Revered as the resting place of Idris I, Morocco’s first major Islamic ruler, this holy town offers breathtaking panoramic views over the green landscape. Though non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, the town’s whitewashed buildings and hilltop setting make it a photographer’s dream.

After soaking in the views, we begin the return journey to Fes. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel, concluding your day of exploring Morocco’s imperial, Roman, and Islamic heritage.
