3 Day Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1 – Fes to Merzouga (Cedars, Valleys & Desert Arrival)

Departure from your Riad or Hotel in Fes is at 8:00 AM. The journey to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes takes approximately 8 hours, offering a changing tapestry of Moroccan landscapes along the way.

Our first stops include the alpine-style town of Ifrane and the nearby Azrou. Here, the cedar forests provide a habitat for troops of wild Barbary macaques. Time is allotted to enjoy the view and observe these playful monkeys in their natural environment.

Lunch is served in Midelt, a town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas mountains. The afternoon drive continues through the Ziz Valley, where panoramic views of vast palm groves unfold before us. We pass through the towns of Erfoud and Rissani, gateways to the Sahara.

By late afternoon, we arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Here begins the quintessential desert experience: a camel trek into the heart of the dunes. The caravan carries you to a desert camp, where the night is spent in a traditional Berber tent. Dinner is served under the stars.

Day 2 – Merzouga to Dades Valley (Gorges & Fossil Valleys)

An early morning wake-up offers the chance to witness sunrise over the Sahara dunes. After breakfast at the camp, we leave the desert behind. An off-road drive takes us across the Hamada, the black desert landscape, before reaching the Saharan town of Rissani.

From Rissani, we head north to Erfoud, a town renowned for its fossils. A stop at a local fossil workshop allows you to see the intricate remains of ancient marine life preserved in the region’s stone.

The route continues to the spectacular Todra Valley. Here, massive canyon walls rise dramatically, creating a paradise for rock climbers and nature lovers alike. Time is allotted for a short trek along the river before we drive onward to the Dades Gorges. Dinner and overnight await at a hotel overlooking this dramatic landscape.

Day 3 – Dades Valley to Marrakech (Kasbahs, Valleys & Atlas Crossing)

Breakfast at the hotel begins the final day of your 3-day desert journey from Fes to Marrakech. The route traces the Thousand Kasbahs Road, passing through the Valley of Roses and offering a visit to the Skoura Oasis. Here, the credible 17th-century Kasbah stands as a testament to the region’s architectural heritage.

The highlight of the morning is the visit to Ait Benhaddou Kasbah. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has served as a filming location for more than 20 movies. Hollywood productions including GladiatorIndiana Jones, and Lawrence of Arabia have all used its dramatic mud-brick walls as a backdrop.

After lunch in the area, the journey enters its final phase. We cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, a winding mountain road offering spectacular viewpoints. Several stops along the way allow for photos and fresh mountain air.

We arrive in Marrakech around 6:00 PM, marking the end of your desert adventure. Drop-off is arranged at your accommodation in the red city.
